ABOUT US

Boyden Observatory

Boyden Observatory

Managed by the Physics Department of the University of the Free State (UFS), Boyden Observatory has a long and distinguished history in astronomical research and education. Originally founded by Harvard University in 1889 and later relocated to Bloemfontein in 1927, it benefits from the clear skies of the Southern Hemisphere.

The observatory is equipped with significant instruments, including a 1.5-meter reflector, the third largest operational telescope in Africa, enabling professional astrophysical research. Beyond its research endeavors, Boyden Observatory is committed to public outreach, running active educational programs for schools and the general public. These initiatives aim to cultivate an appreciation for astronomy and scientific inquiry, making the wonders of the universe accessible to all.

The UFS Boyden refractor stands as a symbol of ongoing astronomical discovery and a dedication to sharing that knowledge.
